Cairns & Motorcyclin
I'm heading up to Cairns for about 3 months to work, considering it'll be dry season and awesome weather was tempted to take up the motorbike. Problem is shipping is sooo exxy eventhough I've been offered an awesome deal.

Anyone live up Cairns way and how are the roads up there? I've googled it a bit and have come across Gilles Rd. Any others and should I do it? Been offered door to door (Adl - Cairns) return service $1521 with Fergusson's Motorcycle Transport, what to do . . . what to do . . .

RE: Cairns & Motorcyclin
i was up there on holidays last year, roads are decent, some mates & I hired bikes for a day, was great fun.

but at $1521.. there's no way i'd bother for only 3 months.

it's getting to cairns backpacker season as well, you'll have loads of fun if you head out to the clubs up there

Wouldn't bother for 3 months man, but the Gillies, Port Douglas, Kuranda, The Rex, those were all the rides I frequented when I was on the road.

Be warned though, Cairns drivers are retarded beyond belief. Indicators are optional, and speed limits are either followed to the .001 km/h or ignored completely.

How are you getting there? You could ride there? Or if you're driving hire a trailer/get a tow ball?

^ I can vouch for Wayne too, he's a good bloke and takes good care of the bikes.

I'm getting flown down by the company. Wish I could get them to cover the cost of shipping it down but they won't even cover the cost of my pushie. I've got a course I'm studying for in July so fun and games will have to wait. The alternative is to hire a bike and do a 2 day trip to take care of cravings. Btw I did check out Wayne's website and it is from $880 each way

RE: Cairns & Motorcyclin
There are some hire bike places up here, but I can't say I've ever dealt with them.
Pop in to Yamaha if you're feeling the need to stare at some bikes, I'll be in the workshop but don't expect me to be able to do any favours. Tongue Or for that matter probably even stop for a minute to say g'day. Sad

RE: Cairns & Motorcyclin
I happened to be going through some old posts and thought I'd share the roads in Cairns with you guys! I didn't end up taking my bike up, hired a Aprilia Pegaso Strada 650 for 2 days and did a 2 day self-guided tour (http://bikingaustralia.com/two-day_self-...ours.htm). I wish Adelaide had such smooth roads!
