RE: RVF400 Rebuild
Hi,
Wheels are ready to be collected from the painters just need to organise the pick up, but I'm in the midst of moving house so other priorities have taken over. My mate that was holidaying in the UK returned, took one look at the drawing for the shims and said, "Ahh, yep, that's a bit too complex for me, I'm gonna need my laser cutting guy" Guess what, laser cutting guy has been on his honeymoon since January, gets back in a week I'm told. While i am waiting i thought i would make an adapter for my compression tester due to the RVF400 using 8mm plugs, the adapters for these plugs are non existent, so i took an old spark plug, chopped the ground electrode, hacked off the porcelain and removed the innards to leave me a nice plug to thread into the plug hole. Just need to braze on a length of pipe with 10mm thread on the end to connect the compression tester up to. I'll take few pics later. |

RE: RVF400 Rebuild
After moving house the last few weeks i have been able to continue with some assembly of the rig.
It's fucking crazy how much shit we can collect in such a short period of time, my garage stuff was such a monumental task of moving!!! Anyway... ![]() ![]() Got the Magteks back from the painter and had some tyres fitted, went to fit them on the bike and realised that the front was never going to fit! Bugger, seems at some point in the ex NSR250 wheels life, it had been machined down to fit some other bike and rendered the front wheel unsuitable for this project, i could have had some spacers machined up but i don't think it would have suited the rest of the build so i have put them up for sale and have already secured another Magtek. Fitted the EBC X-lite discs, new bearings and seals all round with the spacers cleaned up and ready to go, only to find the front axle is 15mm too short! It appears it has the VFR front spindle, i never noticed it when i was stripping it 6 months ago cause as i'm removing an axle i use the bolt head as a land for the mallet to remove the axle without having to hit the thin end with the thread. I can't believe some people are so bodgy when putting bikes together, and to think i did about 5 km's on this bike before i stripped it!!! Any body got a front axle for the RVF????? ![]() ![]() Rear wheel wasn't without its issues, i sourced some local bearings and they are some funny bloody sizes due the single sided swingarm and hub assembly, the large needle bearing didn't fit despite it being the right size so i had to order a Honda one, funnily enough Honda Australia had one in stock. New rear disc and seals as well. ![]() ![]() Tyga triple clamps and Driven clip-ons, new headstem bearings and seals, forks were stripped cleaned and rebuilt with new Honda oil and dust seals. Threw in some Rick Oliver heavier rate springs and some Motul synthetic 10W fork oil. Now that i'm settled into the new place and the wheels are on and it's rolling i should be able to make some good, steady progress again. I should have the shims back from the sheetmetal guys in a week or two, then send the heads off to be skimmed so hopefully have the engine back together within a month or so. I'm going to start a thread with some photography tips off some of you blokes cause i suck balls at it! |

RE: RVF400 Rebuild
those photos are fine lane.
the important stuff for build pics is: lots of natural light (or light other than the flash as flash reflects of metal too much) clear focus, use manual focus if you have to (if your camera has it) good size for viewing online. not too big but certainly not too small. those above are a good size, spot on I'd say. around 800X600 is about right I think. don't take pics from too far away. try and make whatever you are photographing fill the entire frame. with those tips you'll be fine. as I said those pics above are 100% fine. ![]() loving the build too.

RE: RVF400 Rebuild
G'day lads!
I have stripped, cleaned and rebuilt all the brake calipers, they are from an '04 600RR that had only covered around 12 000km's so are pretty fresh already so just a strip, clean and reassembly was all that was needed, they have Teflon coated pistons so they cleaned up really easily. They still had the factory Nissin brake pads with heaps of meat, however the EBC sintered pads got the nod along with Goodridge braided lines and the 600RR master cylinder, should pull up pretty quick i reckon..... ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh and BIG thanks to Raskol for his kind donation of the front axle seen in the left of the second pic!! Champion! Same treatment for the rear master cylinder and caliper along with the EBC pads and Goodridge lines. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tyga rear sets with the carbon heelguards and HRC brake reservoir. Also the carbon fibre rear hugger, to the guys who also bought one of these and brought up the issue of the lopsided rear guard, i also had alignment issues initially, but i have modified it slightly and am more than happy with it now. I removed the slot for the M6 bolt at the front and redrilled a hole further back and this brings the rear of the guard into alignment with the rear tyre. ![]() ![]() And lastly rear subframe. ![]() I have had the loom on the bench and have cleaned it up and will get it placed in the frame i need to mount the CDI and R6 regulator somewhere in the new tail section. |

RE: RVF400 Rebuild
Very nice. Your hugger sits much further off the wheel than mine. Reckon you could take a close up picture of the modification you did?
