Project Sad Panda - MC22

RE: Project Sad Panda - MC22
you need paint stripper, not thinner. apply it with a brush if you get the gel type. wear gloves outside.

sand the forks with ascending weights of paper abrasiveness until they come up smooth and shinier each time, then polish them. if you still want to go that route. if you paint em, double check that etch primer can hold up to heat if you're gonna roast the forks after painting em with vht.

as for normal painting, wet sanding is to remove the orange peel effect left from aerosol paint so it's a completely flat surface. water is there so it doesn't clog the sandpaper.

RE: Project Sad Panda - MC22
Champion, thanks for the info! Much appreciated!

I did get some 800 grit, 1000 grit, 1200 grit and 2000 grit wet and dry to give this a go Smile Im just seeking some polishing pads at the moment as to what is appropriate and what grades for polishing. Id rather have them polished than painted, as I cant stand painting to be honest and dont have the know-how!

RE: Project Sad Panda - MC22
So, about time for another update eh'!?

Decided I was going to give the polishing another go for the forks Tongue God, I can be so indecisive at times Smile

Picked this up to help remove pitting and to polish:
[Image: scaled.php?server=685&filename=i...res=medium]

came up ok after a sand with 800, 1200, and then the two different polishes. Not the best, but not too bad either, it was hard to get off the coating which was already on there without serious elbow grease.
[Image: scaled.php?server=521&filename=i...res=medium]

Obviously the one on the left isn't done yet in this photo, hahaha
[Image: scaled.php?server=593&filename=i...res=medium]

Decided to give the top triple a quick spray
[Image: scaled.php?server=849&filename=i...res=medium]

And the small engine cover
[Image: scaled.php?server=254&filename=i...res=medium]

This was the large cover after a sand and scraping the crap that was dripped down it Confused
[Image: scaled.php?server=543&filename=i...res=medium]

Primed
[Image: scaled.php?server=59&filename=ip...res=medium]

During the spray
[Image: scaled.php?server=406&filename=i...res=medium]
[Image: scaled.php?server=26&filename=ip...res=medium]

after
[Image: scaled.php?server=585&filename=i...res=medium]
[Image: scaled.php?server=7&filename=iph...res=medium]

Fork rebuild with new bushes, seals and dust caps
[Image: scaled.php?server=96&filename=ip...res=medium]
[Image: scaled.php?server=713&filename=i...res=medium]

Sorry about the shitty photos Smile Will put the fork oil and springs\spacer\washer in the forks tonight to finish them off, then its a matter of starting to put the bike back together Smile

Another update on this one:

Forks are done and back on the bike. 10w fork oil and 3 x 20c mod done Smile

New levers on, sprayed the clipons and top triple aswell. Also put on a new clutch cable.
[Image: scaled.php?server=710&filename=i...res=medium]

decided I wasn't happy with the gasket under the side cover, a little bit of it didn't go on properly and when I was tightening it I found 2 of the threads were stuffed and needed helicoiling.

So off with the side cover
[Image: scaled.php?server=18&filename=ip...res=medium]

drilled out the thread
[Image: scaled.php?server=443&filename=i...res=medium]

Used a tap to create a thread
[Image: scaled.php?server=192&filename=i...res=medium]

[Image: scaled.php?server=542&filename=i...res=medium]

put in the helicoil
[Image: scaled.php?server=526&filename=i...res=medium]
[Image: scaled.php?server=849&filename=i...res=medium]

and finished
[Image: scaled.php?server=341&filename=i...res=medium]

Had a bit of trouble with the second one as it was where the sider cover locator was, but eventually after the second helicoil on that one got it spot on Smile

And wasn't happy with the speedo casing which was broken and ziptied on to the bike.
[Image: scaled.php?server=829&filename=i...res=medium]

took my time swapping it into this new speedo case
[Image: scaled.php?server=267&filename=i...res=medium]

[Image: scaled.php?server=685&filename=i...res=medium]

and done
[Image: scaled.php?server=109&filename=i...res=medium]

Then pulled out the old plugs and swapped for new, check out the wasps nest somehow on one of them Confused
[Image: scaled.php?server=696&filename=i...res=medium]

and engines now ready to roll, just need to put it back into the frame this weekend and give it a run to check for oil leaks, which im sure will be non existent Smile Will pickup a new thermostat for it tomorrow also Smile
[Image: scaled.php?server=805&filename=i...res=medium]

Not a bad thing to be doing this weekend I dont think, considering the other bikes are locked away due to the weather

RE: Project Sad Panda - MC22
So, its probably time for an update on this considering its come a long way the last week Big Grin

Its now been de-restricted
[Image: scaled.php?server=713&filename=i...es=landing]

Engine back in
[Image: scaled.php?server=692&filename=i...es=landing]

New thermostat in
[Image: scaled.php?server=256&filename=i...es=landing]

and closer look
[Image: scaled.php?server=268&filename=i...es=landing]

This was cleaned obviously
[Image: scaled.php?server=534&filename=i...es=landing]

[Image: scaled.php?server=546&filename=i...es=landing]

Radiator cleaned, flushed, tested and put back on Smile
[Image: scaled.php?server=96&filename=ip...es=landing]

carbies had been cleaned earlier on and covered, so they went straight on
[Image: scaled.php?server=213&filename=i...es=landing]

Wiring was all done aswell
[Image: scaled.php?server=826&filename=i...es=landing]

extractors on and temp fuel hose connected to test it out
[Image: scaled.php?server=444&filename=i...es=landing]

[Image: scaled.php?server=845&filename=i...es=landing]

and then it was time to start her.....

<embed src="http://img69.imageshack.us/flvplayer.swf?f=Plyi" width="640" height="380" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"/>

Turns out we have a problem (sorry about the shitty pic), but the second carby was leaking fuel into the throat and filling it up. Can probably see all the fuel
[Image: scaled.php?server=820&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

you might be able to see the one carby throat that was filling up here:
[Image: scaled.php?server=651&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

Anyway, so was time to pull the carbies off again and give them a going over again on that particular part. Turns out the jet needle was not sitting in the needle jet holder properly in the diaphragm, which was the cause of the problem, so the needle wasn't moving up and down properly.
[Image: scaled.php?server=88&amp;filename=ip...es=landing]

That was then put back together and functioned exactly as it should Big Grin
[Image: scaled.php?server=641&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

As we all know, im quite pedantic about my bikes, lol... so I was cleaning up all the plastics to put back on Smile
from this:
[Image: scaled.php?server=832&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

to this (still a bit wet though)
[Image: scaled.php?server=100&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

New chain slider
[Image: scaled.php?server=826&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

undertray also cleaned and rejuvinated
[Image: scaled.php?server=191&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

Airbox on
[Image: scaled.php?server=528&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

Also picked up a new set of Conti Street Attack 2's, new wheel bearings and new sintered pads from Mick's Bike and Car Tyres Big Grin Thanks Mick!!

Cleaned all the calipers, gave the pistons a good going over and put the new sintered pads on
[Image: scaled.php?server=204&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

I was even more pedantic, so I cleaned off the crappy black that was sprayed on the disks
[Image: scaled.php?server=856&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

and front went back together aswell with the new pads, cleaned calipers and pistons, cleaned disks, new wheel bearings, new rubber.

[Image: scaled.php?server=7&amp;filename=iph...es=landing]

[Image: scaled.php?server=337&amp;filename=i...es=landing]

<embed src="http://img838.imageshack.us/flvplayer.swf?f=Pz53" width="640" height="380" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"/>

and here you can hear her running sweetly Big Grin

It was a product called Meguires Trim Detail i think from memory Smile Some good stuff, it goes on white, but shines black stuff up like its new Smile
I also forgot to mention I gave the headers a sand down and sprayed them black with high temp paint.
