Electrical issues
Hi guys,
After putting new globes in the back of my instrument cluster and then attaching the instrument cluster to the metal frame on the front of the bike, my socket was touching the screw that holds it in, then it touched some metal part of the bike at the same time. There was a small spark and I saw a tiny bit of smoke... This isn't good I know but I no nothing about electrical issues. So now when I try to turn the ignition on I get nothing.. no lights or anything. All the fuses in the fuse box looked ok, and I even replaced them all just in case and nope... nothing... I seem to have a feeling this isnt gonna be a simple solution to fix and it's gonna cost me more $$ then I would like. But where do I start diagnosing this problem??? Just to add a bit more information, it seems like my socket touched the bottom bolt that holds the instrument cluster in and a metal part on the back of the ignition at the same time, which I think is what caused this... |

RE: Electrical issues
Multimeter and work your way from where you connected the wires to find the source of the short. Check the connection at the CDI firstly and also the cable from the CDI down to the rest of the bike electrics.. Then check the main fuse near there under the seat as you make no mention of checking that one Just hazarding a guess..
Someone with more electrical knowledge will pipe up soon.

So I took the seat off and what do you know its blown... Replaced it and everything seems ok! Thanks alot jlyall!!! I should read the service manual more closely, i'm such a noob. I kinda wasn't thinking straight after it happened as I was pissed at myself for not disconnecting the battery while playing with the electrics. This forum is great for noobs like me I'll be more careful in future.

RE: Electrical issues
Grounding that bolt with your socket shouldn't have blown a fuse.... at all. I would highly recommend you unbolt the instrument again and make sure you didn't pinch a wire somewhere while bolting the instrument in place. If you have, insulate with tape, as you don't want that to be left as is. Otherwise, a minor bump or some movement and that same problem is going to bite ;-)
