Chain Breaker/Rivet
Just wondering who else out there does their own chains breaking and assembling.

I wanna buy a tool to do it myself but I'm not sure which one is the correct one other than 428 or 520 chain sizing.

I had a look at
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TL0005-Heavy-...564656c3ba

The bike shop wants $40 for a chain breaker but didn't tell me if I can install the master clip with it.

Anyone help?

RE: Chain Breaker/Rivet
Yeah that chain breaker should be fine in the eBay ad, looks very similar to mine which we've used on 428, 520 and 525 chains. You can use it for installing a rivet link chain (flaring out the rivet over the chain side plate) or pressing on the side plate to put it on and then pop the clip on afterwards.

Chain breaker/ rivet link tools are awesome.

RE: Chain Breaker/Rivet
At work (Mower machanic) I use a chain saw chain breaker on rideon mower drive chains, I just use a big nut under the chain that I'm breaking, And can add links to it with the same breaker, Quick and easy.
Something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BENCH-MOUNTED...2566929023
Works very well.

REALLY? [Image: duffman.gif]

RE: Chain Breaker/Rivet
I don't use a breaker, just undo the clip on the link that holds the chain together... Can be a bit fiddly though...

RE: Chain Breaker/Rivet
So do you have much trouble getting the link back on without the use of a chain breaker ???

RE: Chain Breaker/Rivet
Nah, don't have problems, I just wind the chain tensioner all the way in before putting the chain back on. It's not that hard really. Definitely helps if the chain is nice and clean first though. Usually just takes a bit of gentle persuasion to get the clip back on the link - nothing out of the ordinary with a 20 year old bike though! Lol

RE: Chain Breaker/Rivet
Last time I did a chain I used a file to file down the rivets and slip the link off and then used a vicegrips to press the link back on. Worked better than it sounds.

RE: Chain Breaker/Rivet
I still find the $50 for a good chain breaker / rivet link flaring tool / side plate press all combined into one is definitely worth it for the ease of use, and peace of mind for pressing it out and in easily anyway.

On an unrelated note, please dear god post up pics and a story about your CR500 super motard.
