RE: Air Conditioning!
yeah I would advise against ducted in an existing property. sometimes it's not too bad, but mostly it will be a bit of a compromise and it'll be expensive. ducted is what you do when you're building the next house...
just get split systems much cheaper and you can run 2 wall units off the one outside unit. at my place I have one giant panasonic and it feeds a wall unit in my bedroom and one in my lounge room (works fine even with both running full pelt) and upstairs I have the external unit mounted on the roof feeding a wall unit on my top floor lounge/office/bar. and yeah so hot yesterday. It was so nice sitting in 20C comfort while it was hot as hades outside. I actually left the AC in my bedroom on all night and had a great sleep. |

RE: Air Conditioning!
+1 for split systems, i have five in my place. They drop the temp of the house down in about 3 minutes when they are all going, plus you can section off bedrooms etc just by closing doors.
Just make sure you dont units too small for the space it is required to cool. Thats a common mistake people make. 4 machines maintaining a constant temp use less power than 1 running flat out trying to maintain the same temp. |

RE: Air Conditioning!
Definately split systems. The technology in inverters and the power savings these days are pretty good and ducted zoning can be a nightmare. Problems can occur with different air perssures in each room, ducting coming apart and when a damper motor goes (which they tend to do quiet often). You loose coling in the ceiling space via the duct and they can whistle a bit.
I've just moved up to Brisbane, once i get myself settled a bit I'lll be installling split systems if anyone wants one done in the next few months. |

RE: Air Conditioning!
Lol u very rarley have those problems with ducted unless idiots install them. Splits are good but by the time u put 3 to 4 half decent ones in u could have had a ducted instead. Splits are good if u live in a box but ductless are better for a house. Ducteds come in inverters too by the way. Once again it depends on brands and the cost to u. I'd always go with a Daikin for splits and for ducteds Temperzone, Daikin or actron air. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

RE: Air Conditioning!
What are u talking about? Ducted goes through the whole house. A half decent split costs from $1500 to $2500. Unless u buy splits from big w or bunnings which cost about $300. Waste of money in my opinion.

RE: Air Conditioning!
who would ask for a one outlet ducted unit?? :/
you should get a professional fella to come around and check out and give the best advice, and you defiantly get what you pay for with air cons.. sure those cheap harvey norman and bunnings brands will work.. but have a short life expectancy and soon as they play up its cheaper to replace the whole unit than the parts. i've literally install hundreds of split systems and dozens of ducted air cons.. always go for a decent brand, i highly recommend Daikin. |

RE: Air Conditioning!
Thanks for the advice guys it was an interesting read but has raised more questions than answers!
Other financial commitments have come up anyway so it looks like I'll be sweltering through the next summer.
